How to close a futures position (market close, limit close, partial close, close all, reverse)
How to close a futures position
You can close a perpetual futures position fully or partly, at the market price or at a price you choose, close all positions at once, or reverse a position. Every close order is sent as a reduce-only order, so it can only shrink or end your position and never open a new one.
Where to find it
Open the futures trading page (for example BTCUSDT Perp), go to the Positions tab under the chart and find your position.
- Wide screens (desktop table): the row has two small buttons, Market and Limit, a price box (labelled "Price"), a Last button that fills in the latest traded price, and a quantity box (labelled "Qty"). Both boxes start filled with the mark price and your full position size.
- Tablets and phones (position card): tap Close. A window opens with two tabs, Market Close and Limit Close.
- Other buttons on the row or card: Reverse, the TP/SL pencil, and the leverage and margin controls.
Close at market price
- Make sure the quantity is what you want to close. Leave the full size to close everything.
- Click Market (desktop) or open Close, stay on Market Close and choose the amount (see below), then press Confirm.
- A confirmation window titled Close Position appears with Size, Entry Price, Mark Price and PnL, and this warning: "This position will be closed at market price. Actual execution price may differ from the mark price."
- Press Confirm Close (the button shows "Closing..." while it works).
- On success you see Market close order placed, for example "BTCUSDT Long 0.5 closed at market".
A market close fills at the best available price right now, so the price you get can differ from the mark price (slippage).
Close at a price you choose (limit close)
- Enter the price you want in the price box (or press Last to use the latest traded price). On a phone choose the Limit Close tab and fill in "Price" and "Amount".
- Enter the quantity, then click Limit (desktop) or Confirm (phone).
- The confirmation window shows "Limit Price" instead of Mark Price. You can edit the limit price there before confirming. No market-price warning is shown because the order waits for your price.
- On success you see Limit close order placed, for example "BTCUSDT Long 0.5 @ 62000".
A limit close is a normal resting order (it stays active until it fills or you cancel it). It appears in the Open Orders tab with Reduce Only set to Yes. Your position stays open until the order fills. To cancel it, use Cancel in Open Orders (see Futures orders and trades history).
Close only part of a position
On a phone or tablet, the window has quick buttons 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of your position size. You can also type an exact amount. The window also shows Estimated PnL for the amount you chose (for example "12.34 USDT", or "-- USDT" when a price or amount is missing). On a desktop row, simply type a smaller number in the quantity box.
The rest of the position stays open with the same entry price and leverage.
Close all positions
- Click Close All Positions (above the list on a phone or tablet, in the table header on desktop). It appears on phones and tablets only when you hold more than one position.
- The confirmation window says "You are about to close the number shown of position(s) at market price." and "All positions will be closed at market price. Actual execution prices may differ from mark prices."
- Press Confirm Close.
- Success shows All positions closed. If some orders failed you see Failed to close some positions or the reason from the exchange. Check the Positions tab to see what is still open and close the rest.
If you have no positions: "No positions to close".
Reverse a position
Reverse flips your position to the opposite side in one step.
- Click Reverse. The window Reverse position shows Current position (side, size, entry price, and "Unrealized PnL (realized on reverse)") and After reverse (the new side, same size, and "Est. entry price").
- The Order to send line reads like "Market Sell 0.5 BTC".
- Read the warning: "Executes immediately as a market order for 2× your position size. The fill price may differ from the mark price due to slippage, and trading fees apply."
- Press Confirm reverse ("Reversing..." while it works). Success: Position reversed, for example "BTCUSDT position reversed to Short". Failure: Failed to reverse position or a message from the exchange. Cancel leaves the position as it is.
Reversing realizes your current PnL and opens a new position on the other side, so fees are charged on the whole 2x order.
The "Don't show this again" box
The close confirmation has a tick box: "Don't show this again. You can change this in Preferences." If you tick it, the confirmation window is skipped and the order is sent immediately when you click Market or Limit or Close All Positions. This choice is saved in your browser only.
Messages and what to do
| Message | Meaning and action |
|---|---|
| Invalid quantity | The quantity is empty, zero or not a number. Enter a positive amount. |
| Quantity exceeds position size | You typed more than you hold. Use 100% or a smaller amount. |
| Invalid price | Limit price is empty or not a positive number. |
| Something went wrong (title) with a reason | The exchange rejected the order. Read the reason shown and try again. If it repeats, contact Support. |
| Failed to close some positions | At least one of your close-all orders failed. Check Positions and close the rest one by one. |
| Failed to reverse position | The reverse order was rejected. Read the reason shown. Reverse sends an order for twice your position size, so check your Available Balance; you can also close the position instead. |
If a close order is accepted but you still see the position, wait a moment and refresh. A limit close that has not filled leaves the position open.
FAQ
Will closing return my margin? Closing releases the margin and realizes your profit or loss into your futures balance. The exact amounts are in Trade History and Transaction History.
Can I close a position that has TP/SL set? Yes, you can close it at any time with the buttons above. Afterwards, check the Open Orders tab to see which orders are still listed.
Does close cost fees? Yes, a trading fee applies to the closing trade; see Futures fees.
I opened the position with a voucher. Vouchers have their own rules; see What are vouchers.
When to contact Support
If a close order failed repeatedly or a position will not close, send: the contract, side, size, the time, the exact message shown (screenshot), the order type (market or limit) and, if you have it, the order ID from Order History.
Safety reminder
Closing and reversing are immediate market actions in a fast market. Check the size and side before you confirm. Never share your password, 2FA code, seed phrase or private key with anyone, including Support.
