How to adjust leverage on a futures contract
What it is
Leverage sets how large a position you can open compared with the margin you put in. For example, at the leverage shown as 10x the exchange treats your margin as supporting a position about ten times larger. Higher leverage needs less margin but brings the liquidation price closer to the market price, so small price moves can close your position. Leverage is set separately for each perpetual contract.
Where to find it
- Open a perpetual trading page.
- In the Place Order form (or the phone order panel), find the buttons at the top: the margin mode (Cross or Isolated) and the leverage button showing your current value, for example 10x.
- Press the leverage button. The Adjust Leverage window opens, headed by the contract name and "Perpetual".
How to change it
- Set the value in any of these ways:
- Type a whole number into the box next to x. Only digits are accepted.
- Drag the slider.
- Press one of the preset numbers under the slider (for example 1x and the maximum).
- On a phone, use the − and + buttons (their labels read "Decrease Leverage" and "Increase Leverage").
- Check the information in the window (see below).
- Press Confirm.
On success you see Leverage Changed with the text "Leverage has been set to {leverage}x" and the leverage button shows the new value.
The Confirm button is disabled when the value is the same as your current leverage, or while the change is being saved (it shows a spinner).
What limits apply
- The lowest value is 1x.
- The highest value depends on the contract. Each contract has its own maximum leverage, and the app never offers more than 125x. If the contract's maximum is lower, the slider stops there. If you type a number higher than the maximum, the box changes it to the highest allowed value.
- The maximum allowed can also depend on position size (see below).
Position limits by leverage
Larger positions are allowed only at lower leverage. In the Adjust Leverage window:
- Max Position Value shows the largest position (in USDT) allowed at the leverage you selected, when the contract has size limits. If it does not appear, no limit applies at that level.
- Press Position Limit by Leverage to open a table with two columns, Position Value (USDT) and Max Leverage. Find the row for the position size you want to trade; that row shows the highest leverage allowed. The row matching your selected leverage is highlighted.
The exact limits are set by the platform per contract; always read them in this table.
When you place an order, the app also checks your leverage against the order size:
- "Position value exceeds max {max} USDT for {leverage}x leverage": reduce the order size or lower your leverage.
- "Leverage {leverage}x exceeds max {max}x for this position size": at this size the contract only allows the lower leverage shown. Reduce the size, or lower your leverage to the maximum shown.
The risk warning
The window always shows: "Selecting higher leverage such as [{leverage}x] increases your liquidation risk. Always manage your risk levels. See our Help Article for more information." Higher leverage means a smaller price move can liquidate your position.
Messages
| Message | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Leverage Changed / "Leverage has been set to {leverage}x" | Success. | Nothing. |
| Failed to change leverage with "Something went wrong" | The change was not saved. | Try again. If it keeps failing, contact Support. |
| "This is taking longer than usual. We'll update your settings when it's done." | The request timed out. It may still complete, and the app refreshes your settings. | Wait a minute, then check the leverage button. Do not repeat the change many times. |
| "Leverage and margin mode are locked while a voucher position is open." | A position on this contract was opened with a voucher. Leverage and margin mode cannot be changed until it is closed. The leverage button, slider and Confirm are disabled. | Close the voucher position first. See the Vouchers articles and My Vouchers. |
Open positions and orders
The leverage window itself does not block you when you have an open position or open orders (unlike margin mode, which is blocked). A change applies to the contract, so it affects your open position's liquidation price. After changing, check your position's liquidation price in the positions panel. If the exchange refuses a change for your situation, you see Failed to change leverage.
FAQ
Does leverage change my profit? Profit and loss follow the size of your position. Leverage changes how much margin you must lock and how close liquidation is. This is not investment advice.
Is leverage the same for all symbols? No. It is set per contract.
Why can't I select 125x? The maximum for that contract may be lower, or position size brackets may limit leverage for the size you want.
Why is the leverage button greyed out? A voucher position is open on this contract.
Why did the maximum position shrink when I increased leverage? Contracts allow smaller maximum positions at higher leverage. See the table under Position Limit by Leverage.
When to contact Support
Include: contract symbol, the leverage you tried to set, current leverage, margin mode, whether you have an open position or open orders on it, the exact message shown (screenshot), and the time with time zone.
Safety reminder
High leverage can liquidate your position quickly and you can lose your margin. Never share your password, 2FA code, seed phrase or private key with anyone.
